An elegantly designed and complete set. The hand carved mother of pearl handles are the feature of these pieces. The mother of pearl is very high qulaity and would have been carved from Australian pearl shell which were exported to England from the 1800s.
The metal is silver plate, which is one step above stainless steel or chrome but one step down from sterling silver. The main draw back of silver plate is that the light scratches which can be seen on the metal cannot be polished out. Whereas as sterling silver is solid silver, it can be continually polished until all marks are removed. However, the advantage of silver plate is obviously that it is significantly cheaper than sterling silver.
All pieces are in good order. The metal has light scratches which is typical of silver plate and for a set produced approxiatemly one centry ago. The knives are 16.5cm. The forks 13.5cm. The case is 27x20x3cm.
A wonderful piece of history and will be an interesting addition to any table setting. A lovely gift for anyone or for any special occasion.
