The standout feature of this superb set is the hand-carved mother of pearl handles. The mother of pearl almost certainly would have been carved from Australian pearl shells which were exported to England from the 1800s. The craftsmanship shows great skill in both their quality and uniformity. It would have been a time consuming and difficult design to execute which is why such sets are rarely seen and most instead have smooth-shaped handles.
The silver and hallmarks are in excellent condition. The set was produced by famed Silversmith James Dixon & Sons, founded in Sheffield, England, in 1806. This is the same company that produced the trophy for the Augusta National Masters golf tournament! I have included an image of the trophy and a historical image of their workshop.
It is also of interest that the set was produced in 1917 which was during the later stages of WWI. One would have assumed the production of such sets to have been significantly lower at such a time.
Each piece is 155mm in length. The presentation case has the appearance of a Cartier box and shows signs of wear consistent with its age and as shown in the images. The case measures 210mm x 155mm x 30mm.
A wonderful piece of history and gift for anyone or for any special occasion.
Please get in touch if you have any questions about the piece. It will be a pleasure to assist. Please also check out the other pieces in the store.
